(Reuters) - The action-packed sixth installment of the "Fast & Furious" film franchise claimed victory at the North American box office for the three-day U.S. Memorial Day weekend on Monday, and became the biggest opening film in Universal Pictures' history.
"Fast & Furious 6," starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, grossed an estimated $120 million from Friday till Monday, making it the second-biggest film opening of the year behind Disney's "Iron Man 3's" $175.3 million earlier this month.
The film also rang up an estimated $300 million at the global box office.
Universal Pictures said "Fast & Furious 6" bested its predecessor in the series, "Fast Five," which previously held the title of best opening for the studio with $83.6 million at domestic theaters.
"Fast & Furious 6" also raced ahead of raunchy comedy "The Hangover Part III," the third and final installment of the comedy about four men trying to piece together the events of a wild night.
"Hangover," starring Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms as friends unwittingly drawn back to Las Vegas, made an estimated $51.2 million at the U.S. and Canada box office over the long weekend, keeping in line with studio projections.
The film also opened in its first three international markets over the weekend - United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand - grossing $19 million, bringing the total in the markets where it is showing to an estimated $70.2 million.
"Some might argue that we should have stopped at one, but we loved doing these movies and the audience has been there" for them, Todd Philips, the director of the "Hangover" franchise, told Reuters ahead of the film's release.
"The word 'hangover' ... is something that people share around the world. There are some comedies that are uniquely American, but hangovers exist for the world," he added.
Sci-fi action adventure sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness," playing in 3D and Imax theaters, came in at No. 3 at the domestic box office with $47 million from Friday to Monday, bringing its cumulative total to $155.8 million since opening on May 17.
Animated family film "Epic," about a secret world in which nature's inhabitants come together to fight evil forces, opened on Friday and has grossed an estimated $42.6 million domestically over the Memorial Day weekend.

Universal Pictures, a unit of Comcast Corp, released "Fast & Furious 6," Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros Studios distributed "The Hangover Part III," and "Star Trek Into Darkness" was released by Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.

When Aslaug Magnusdottir started going to the top runway fashion shows in Milan, Paris and New York, she often thought about the wasted opportunity that designers -- traditional leaders as well as the up-and-coming -- were missing. "Because not many women could come to these shows, they were completely shut out of buying the fashion there," said Magnusdottir.
Right around that time, Magnusdottir fell in love with a dress she saw at a show. "I was there and I was able to purchase it," she said. Other women -- those who could not attend the show -- would never see the design and, unless it was bought by a department store, would never have the opportunity to buy it. "So why were we letting middlemen get in the way?" she asked. "It didn't make sense."
Magnusdottir, speaking during Penn Fashion Week last month, talked about her experiences starting up the luxury online etailer Moda Operandi. On Monday, May 20, the Daily Beast reported that she has left her job as co-founder and CEO of the company she started in 2010 with former Voguecontributing editor Laura Santo Domingo. The Daily Beastcites a source describing Magnusdottir's departure as the result of a "rift" between Magnusdottir and Santo Domingo.
An $80,000 Dress
Before starting Modi Operandi, Magnusdottir worked for the Gilt Groupe, a leader in online sales, primarily in discounting. Magnusdottir, however, was more interested in using the Internet to sell high-end fashion to customers who wanted to buy unique pieces directly from designers.
And so the idea for Moda Operandi was born, although Magnusdottir and Santo Domingo initially encountered skepticism from potential investors. These investors had seen, particularly through Gilt, that discounting of high-fashion would work online, but they doubted that women accustomed to discounts would go for the expensive one-off -- or small batch -- pieces.
"'Why would people want to pay full price any more?' they said to us," recalled Magnusdottir. "They asked why customers would want to wait for weeks or maybe months for a pre-order. Wasn't the Internet about immediate gratification? And why would designers want to sell out of a runway show?"
According to Magnusdottir, when looking for financing for any business, prospective entrepreneurs have to find the right person -- the one who will understand the idea and be willing to support it. In her case, she found venture capitalists who trusted her experience and knew, as few investors do, the fashion business.
Magnusdottir gives Gilt big kudos for getting people to shop for fashion online. "For them and their competitors, though, it was all about discounts, all about that kind of value." Moda would have to work differently. There would be no discounts because the pieces would be, essentially, custom-made. In addition, customers would have to accept the fact that they might end up waiting months for their items to be made. In other words, they could not count on them being "contemporary."
The move to online buying was a crucial factor, and Gilt's success proved that it could work in fashion. Moda Operandi could show the customers what was coming off the runways, and customers who could never attend the shows could see the designs up close. Magnusdottir and Santo Domingo were able to convince enough designers to sign on, and by mid-2011, just months after first presenting the idea to investors, the company was selling its products. It now has 300 brands or designers on its list.
Magnusdottir said she was not surprised that women would spend substantial sums to get the pieces they wanted. The average item from Moda Operandi has sold for $900; the average transaction, which can be multiple items, is $1,500. The highest price paid for a dress has been $80,000. The company also sells shoes and accessories.
"We were able to leverage the buzz around the various fashion weeks into a commercial opportunity for the designers and for the customers," she said. Before, if a designer did not get a big order from a retailer, that was it. Moda Operandi has changed that business model. Customers must pay 50% up front, but they are willing to do so to have something special, according to Magnusdottir.
"For the first time, women are getting a chance [to buy from] the runway collection," she added. Prior to the founding of Moda Operandi, "even if a local store bought the dress you love, your size might be sold out. Our customers are now the first to receive items, sometimes exclusively. Actually, younger customers love the idea that they pay 50% up front and pay the rest only when the items are ready to ship. They call it 'a fancy layaway.'"
A Way Out of Iceland
Magnusdottir grew up in Iceland and earned an undergraduate law degree there before going to Harvard Business School and Duke University School of Law. The most important influences on her, she said, were her mother and famed retail executive Marvin Traub. "My mom definitely inspired me from the beginning. There are only 300,000 people in Iceland, and sometimes I felt there would be no way out of there. Every day, she would say, 'You can do anything.' That was always an inspiration."
She eventually settled in London -- with an American husband who wanted to return home. Magnusdottir came back to the U.S. without a job, but through a connection, met with Traub, who had been the CEO of Bloomingdale's for 22 years and was then in his 80s and had begun to do some consulting. "I started working with him immediately," Magnusdottir said. "My first meeting was with Harvey Weinstein to buy Halston. I met everyone running fashion companies. [Traub] was advising clients in the Middle East, Russia, Greece, Canada. There is no question I was extremely lucky."
She has used some of those international contacts -- about 20% of Moda Operandi's customers are in the Middle East -- but noted that international business can be difficult, even through the Internet. People in the Middle East, she said, are used to the trunk show concept and are used to speaking in English. In China and Brazil, however, language can be a factor, and duty fees are high. Some countries are still not used to credit cards, she added, and in any case, payments are often split between banks or credit systems. Finally, because of the nature of the business -- centered on few but expensive items -- warehousing is difficult due to intermittent delivery and the need for greater security.
"You have to learn to adapt and I am sure we will, but we are still just growing," she said.
Hiring a CTO
The one imperative when starting a new entrepreneurial business is to have on board everyone who shares your vision, or is at least amenable to helping you with it, said Magnusdottir. For Moda Operandi, she and Santo Domingo had complementary skills -- Santo Domingo with a head for fashion and design, and Magnusdottir as a business expert. Neither was particularly adept at technology, however, so their first investors insisted that one of the duo's initial hires be a chief technology officer.
Next, Magnusdottir said, it is important to start hiring people who will be flexible. "Startups have a unique challenge. You can't offer clear career paths because there are so few people to move up and around, which causes some anxiety. Not all people are meant to be in a startup. Often we have found that people need to move around from one role to another -- not always doing what they were first hired to do -- depending on [what is going on] at the time. Maybe someone is not comfortable with that. You must be comfortable with things changing quickly and be able to adjust to new processes."
On the other hand, she added, she has learned as a boss that these same challenged employees need some, as the cliché goes, "tender loving care." "You need to constantly talk to employees and make sure they know they can express their concerns," she said. "I have found that people need a lot more praise than you expect. Never underestimate how far a 'thank you' or a 'you did a great job' goes.
"But also try to have some fun. At Moda, it may not be much, but we have a Ping Pong table and do Friday afternoon drinks. We also do ballet two times a week. Everyone works hard, so being friends and hanging out is really important."
Though Moda Operandi worked hard at nailing down its concept and getting its first customers, the next phase is to find out how to expand that base while also keeping current patrons. "We are pretty sure our base is a woman who is high-income and loves fashion, who wants statement pieces," Magnusdottir said. 
Originally, the company did not have a big marketing budget, so it looked for inexpensive ways to get the word out about their business. With Santo Domingo's journalistic connections, they were able to get magazines and bloggers to write articles about the company.
Then Moda Operandi decided to take a chance on a strategy. "We made the site private and hard to join," said Magnusdottir. "We made people fill out a full page application. Lauren would read them and turn people down. What that did for us was create a lot of desire and get the press excited. People wanted to be accepted as members. We allowed early members to invite friends, and that made them feel special -- to be one of the few people to be able to have other folks join."
One of the most important things to know about being an entrepreneur, said Magnusdottir, "is that there are a lot of things, no matter how great your experience, that you will not know -- and that you will have to depend on other people, and circumstances, to [teach you]. Don't ever be afraid to reinvent yourself. Constantly look at the environment and [try to] be continually groundbreaking." Finally, she said, "ask always if there is something else you can" do to improve the business.

In this season of non-stop mudslinging and campaign acrimony, there's a hot-button issue on which Republicans and Democrats actually agree. Stranger still, it involves taxes, and a set of bills in Congress that, though stagnant until post-Election Day at the earliest, could end tax-free shopping on the Internet as we know it.
At debate is a wrinkle online shoppers love, but brick-and-mortar small businesses loathe: the lack of state tax collection by online retailers. It's part of a long-broken system, and a set of three bills currently before Congress aims to fix the problem. In the process, it would also add a timely shot of much-needed revenue to state coffers, while clarifying tax collection for small business owners and consumers alike.
Currently, there are three online sales tax bills before Congress: the Marketplace Fairness Act in the Senate, the Marketplace Equity Act in the House of Representatives, and the Main Street Fairness Act in both chambers.
The bills all have similar aims, but some differences; the Main Street Fairness Act, introduced in July 2011, would provide authorization for states that have signed on to the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement. Currently, 24 states have passed legislation to conform to the SSUTA.
The bills are unique in that they have bipartisan support from politicians who rarely if ever agree on tax issues, including Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) and Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tennessee).
Taken as a whole, the bills before Congress would bring some sanity and order to a nationwide system of more than 9,600 state tax jurisdictions. Streamlined states have just one tax rate for most items (though they would still set individual rates apart from each other). So the new bills would not change states over to one universal state sales tax.
The five states with the highest average combined state sales tax rates are Tennessee (9.43 percent), Arizona (9.12 percent), Louisiana (8.86 percent), Washington (8.83 percent), and Oklahoma (8.68 percent), according to the Tax Foundation. The five states with the lowest average combined rates are Hawaii (4.35 percent), Maine (5 percent), Virginia (5 percent), Wyoming (5.18 percent), and Wisconsin (5.43 percent).
Five states have no sales tax: Delaware, Montana, Oregon, New Hampshire and Alaska.
Meanwhile, much confusion remains surrounding how and when Internet businesses will universally charge state sales tax. There's also some uncertainty as to what this will mean for small business owners, as much depends on how one does the bulk of their business.
Those with physical storefronts-the Main Street retailers who've long bemoaned the competitive advantage of tax-free shopping on sites such as Amazon.com-should see a more level playing field. Some, like Danny Givens, have been especially outspoken. He's the owner of Givens Books and Little Dickens toys, a 16,000-ft. emporium based in Lynchburg, Virginia. The business has been in his family since 1976, and Givens thinks that when huge online sellers move mountains of goods without any sales tax, they also bury homegrown retailers in the process.
"It only makes sense to force all online retailers to basically pay their share in the game," Givens says. "We sell goods online, too, and yet it's a disadvantage for brick-and-mortar stores like us when Amazon doesn't collect taxes. We pay sales tax, property taxes and other fees in terms of building our community. It's only fair that Amazon pay state taxes, too."
Amazon has voluntarily agreed to start collecting Virginia's sales tax, though it won't start doing so until September 2013; at least five more states will reap taxes on Amazon sales over the next four years, including New Jersey, Indiana, Nevada, Tennessee and South Carolina. California and Pennsylvania began collecting state taxes on Amazon sales this month.
In the meantime, if online state sales taxes are implemented nationwide, "This will remove the competitive advantage pure online retailers have held," says Scott Smith, a tax attorney with Baker Donelson in Nashville, Tennessee.
Further, the online sales tax collection bills before Congress have certain exemptions for small businesses, so shops need not worry about collecting sales tax if they make less than $500,000 in annual sales, says David Campbell, the CEO of TaxCloud, a free internet sales tax calculation service.
But if your annual sales surpass that $500,000 threshold, it's safe to assume you'll be liable for collecting sales and use taxes. Under those parameters, "Smaller operators are most likely to be hurt," says Bruce Clark, an associate professor of marketing at Northeastern University's College of Business Administration. "Large organizations have the resources to comply with regulatory burdens, even if they don't like them."
Yet Campbell stresses that collecting taxes isn't as burdensome as it might sound, even it removes some competitive advantage price-wise.
"It's no more complicated than calculating shipping costs," Campbell says. "Sales tax managementsoftware is available at every price point, including free. So collecting sales tax can be easy and cheap for anyone, including sole proprietorships." At the very least, it's a move towards collecting more taxes for strapped state treasuries without the appearance of raising taxes. That said, it would be a mistake to call online sales tax laws a cash grab, says Dennis Hoffman, director of the L. William Seidman Research Institute at Arizona State University's W. P. Carey School of Business.
"In Arizona, this issue was raised by retail businesses, not government bureaucrats," Hoffman says. "And legislators in Arizona are much more prone to cutting taxes than raising them. So it wouldn't be surprising to see overall sales tax rates decline once this broader uniform base is put in place."
Regardless, many experts see shoppers as having the most to lose. For them, tax-free online shopping has an obvious appeal: lower prices. But online shoppers have always been liable to pay state taxes for their purchases, even if merchants don't collect them.
This means consumers can be audited and charged penalties for failing to pay sales taxes. That's right: That tax-free bargain on a vacuum cleaner you just bought online could mean an audit from your state later on, at least in theory.
But this almost never happens, as states lack the resources to chase down taxes for every single web purchase. What's more, states are often unable to enforce their own laws because of a 1992 U.S. Supreme Court decision that some experts say no longer holds water in the Information Age. Back then the court recognized it was a record-keeping nightmare for retailers working across state lines to track every single tax rate and regulation, especially if businesses didn't have a physical office there.
But technology has come a long way since 1992. Now, state taxes can be calculated easily, and the Supreme Court decision left the door open for Congress to enact new laws as it saw fit.
While the sluggish pace of Congress on the three measures before it has frustrated some small business owners, new tax laws are all but inevitable. And that's a good thing, experts say, even if grumbling web shoppers might not think so at first.

"Everybody wins, even consumers," Campbell says. "We already owe sales tax when we make an online purchase, so if the store collects it, the shopper doesn't have to keep track of it. And more revenue means more funding for libraries, parks, police and fire departments, and services for children and the elderly. So their local communities win, too."

The phrase "free shipping" is like a siren song to many who shop on the Internet.
For whatever reason, a free shipping offer that saves a customer $6.99 is more appealing to many than a discount that cuts the purchase price by $10, says Wharton marketing professor David Bell. Bell noticed this phenomenon a few years ago while doing research for an online grocery store, and the observation prompted him to look more closely at the ways Internet retailers use shipping charges -- or the lack thereof -- as a promotional tool.
The result is a model that can help managers set shipping fees in ways that both appeal to customers and drive them to buy in quantities that can be efficiently processed. "There is no direct analog to this in the traditional retail world," Bell says. "It seemed to us that firms had not figured out the 'right' shipping policy, so there's a lot of experimentation going on without clear guidelines."

Consumers like free shipping offers, perhaps because it makes the online retail transaction more comparable with that at the neighborhood store. Whatever the reason,it's clear that consumer behavior changes when shipping fees are imposed. With fees, shoppers will make fewer shopping trips and purchase more goods at a time -- not unlike shoppers who drive great distances to a particular store, Bell says, and decide they had better stock up while they're there. Alternately, fees can prompt consumers to simply walk away. A survey from 2004 found that shipping and handling costs triggered 52% of the abandonment of online shopping carts, Bell says.
Internet-based shopping is the fastest growing sector of retailing in the U.S., Bell says, with sales exceeding $110 billion during 2004. Approximately 60% of online retailers cite "free shipping with conditions" as their most successful marketing tool.
While some might argue that shipping fees are merely a substitute for the time and travel costs involved with visiting a bricks-and-mortar retailer, consumers may not buy that argument, Bell notes, adding that the link might not be so clear in the minds of many because travel costs are not collected at the traditional retailer's point of sale.
Some companies have struck a middle ground by waving shipping costs when customers exceed a threshold -- a strategy that can indeed make customers think differently about price, Bell says. Whereas higher prices always are bad for consumers in traditional retailing, customers of online retailers can benefit from higher prices because they push the total closer to the free shipping threshold.
Setting Thresholds -- and Prices
In a recent paper titled, "Free Shipping and Repeat Buying on the Internet: Theory and Evidence," Bell and two colleagues -- Skander Essegaier, a professor at Koc University in Istanbul, and Yinghui Yang, a professor at the University of California at Davis -- developed a model that shows how firms can use this dynamic to their advantage, while not putting customers at a disadvantage.
Bell gives an example of a firm that lowers its free-shipping threshold to induce customers to purchase smaller quantities with greater frequency. If the company's goal is to leave consumers equally well off in terms of their long run costs, should the threshold change be accompanied by price increases or decreases? Bell's model shows that the answer depends on where the firm's prices currently stand.
A firm with already low prices, relative to the model, should drop prices further when lowering the threshold. A failure to do so would give consumers a benefit at the firm's expense, Bell said, because consumers would hit the free shipping threshold more often. Conversely, a firm with high prices should increase them further when lowering the free shipping threshold, since the company is likely to be paying shipping costs more often. "In the latter case, people pay more for the products, but they will more often get free shipping. In the other case, they will pay less for the products, but more for shipping," Bell says. "So, the total cost of products and shipping cost will net out to be the same in both cases. ... Ultimately, the rational consumer is indifferent."
If consumers are indifferent, why should managers care? Because a firm might be able to more efficiently deliver the same quantity of products to a customer in, for example, four purchases over a period of time than the same quantity all at once or in eight smaller purchases.
Bell cites the example of Net Grocer, an online grocery firm that calculates shipping costs based on the size and location of particular orders. The company uses shipping fees to push consumers away from ordering either tiny or massive quantities of goods, both of which can be more costly for the company to fill. Companies that want to fill relatively few orders will raise their free shipping threshold; firms that want customers to visit regularly -- perhaps so they can sell ads on their site -- might prefer low shipping thresholds.
Bell points out that Amazon.com has experimented with free shipping thresholds since 2002. Initially, Amazon offered consumers free shipping if they spent $99, and then lowered the bar twice during 2002 -- first to $49, then to $25. Data from comScore, a firm that tracks Internet browsing and purchasing behavior for academic research, documented the impact of the changes. When a $49 purchase triggered free shipping, the average purchase quantity of products per order was 3.31. When the threshold fell to $25, the average purchase quantity dropped to 2.53. The comScore data included 45 purchasers who bought from Amazon.com when both thresholds were in place. Those consumers spent $17 less per "free-shipping" order under the lower threshold, and purchased 1.82 fewer items.
In addition, the Amazon case shows that lower thresholds for free shipping also lead to greater variation in prices for the same goods. It makes sense, Bell says, because as free shipping thresholds drop, consumers have less reason to make purchasing decisions on price alone. A similar dynamic explains why there is less price dispersion -- a smaller gap between the minimum and maximum price at a specific point in time -- for pharmaceutical products used chronically, rather than episodically. In an extreme world where price information about a particular good can be obtained from many sellers at zero cost, there should be no price dispersion. This is because there is no effort or search cost for consumers that make it possible for different sellers to charge different prices for the same item. In the pharmaceutical example, users should be more willing to shop around for drugs that are used repeatedly for longer periods. "The more incentive there is to search on price, the less dispersion there should be," he says.
As Internet retailing grows, there likely will be more opportunities for research on trends in free shipping. Bell's model, for example, is based on consumption patterns in which the purchaser shops, stores the inventory and then replenishes once the inventory is depleted. So, while the model works for describing how people buy groceries or even books, it's not applicable to durable goods, such as household appliances, automobiles, or other large ticket, infrequently purchased items. Even in the world of non-durable goods, there's room for more research as companies innovate.
Amazon.com, for example, now offers what Bell calls an "all you can eat" express shipping option, called Amazon Prime, for an annual fee of $79. "While we do not consider this variation explicitly, our research is a first attempt at an analytical framework for understanding the effect of such policies," Bell and colleagues write. "Future work might also consider different classes of shipping service defined by delivery speed."

The bill, called the Marketplace Fairness Act, would allow states to require online sellers around the country to collect sales tax for them on purchases made by their residents.
Big online sellers have expanded their physical operations nationwide, building warehouses and other facilities to speed delivery, while traditional stores increasingly have an online presence. That has turned the tables for the online retailers, which had benefitted richly from not having to charge shoppers a sales tax on their goods in most states.
With their advantage eroding, the Web stores have become part of a surge of corporate support helping to propel the Senate bill toward likely passage, at least in that chamber and possibly also in the House.
The legislation would effectively replace a 1992 Supreme Court decision, made in the early days of the commercial Internet, that held that a state couldn't force a retailer to collect sales tax unless the retailer had a physical presence in the state, such as a store or a warehouse.

Amazon.com Inc., AMZN -0.02% Wal-Mart Stores Inc. WMT +1.28% and Best BuyCo. BBY -0.99% are all supporting the bill.
EBay Inc. is lobbying to limit the bill's effects, not kill it outright, a sign it sees passage of some version as unavoidable.
For its part, though, eBay EBAY +0.29% has been lobbying for a higher threshold to trigger the sales tax—currently sellers of $1 million or more annually.
Chief Executive John Donahoe sent out millions of emails over the weekend seeking to enlist eBay users in his fight to raise that bar to $10 million. Though the company says it doesn't have a tally of how many of its sellers would be affected by a $1 million threshold, it is presumably fighting for the lion's share.
Mr. Donahoe has said the bill would damage smaller retailers by treating them the same way it treats large merchants that have sophisticated tax-collection capabilities.
EBay makes its money in part by collecting commission fees from sellers, meaning a bill that drives smaller merchants off the site would damage its bottom line.
An eBay official said the company is fighting an uphill battle given the big retailers' resources. But it has public support for its position, and it also draws support from nonsales-tax states and others.
"If eBay were the only voice expressing concerns with the Internet sales tax bill that is backed by all the biggest retailers and every level of state and local government, of course it could not possibly be stopped," said Brian Bieron, senior director of eBay's global public policy.
"That isn't really what's going on," he said. "The campaign to expand Internet sales taxes has a lot of money, a lot of lobbyists and PR firms. They have a lot of resources. But their idea is not popular, and at the end of the day, you can dress a pig up but it still stinks."
The bill highlights the maturation of e-commerce into an increasing threat to established retailers like Wal-Mart. While more than 90% of retail is still in bricks-and-mortar storefronts, e-commerce retailers promise nearly unlimited inventory, fast delivery to customers' doors and lower prices.
Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos has said he founded his company in low-population Washington state so sales taxes wouldn't affect customers in bigger states. And for years, Amazon gave employees color-coded U.S. maps that showed "red states" where they couldn't travel for fear of triggering sales-tax collection.
But as Amazon has grown, the red states have dwindled. With an eye on ever-faster shipping, Amazon has been striking deals with states to build massive distribution centers close to urban centers in exchange for delaying the start of sales-tax collection or other advantages.
In 2012 alone, some of the largest states, including California, Texas and Pennsylvania, began requiring sales-tax collection from Amazon customers. And by 2014, Connecticut, Massachusetts and several other states will require the levies.
